LED Sign Basics & Anatomy

LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) are extremely long-lasting solid state lights that are rated with a 100,000 hour lifespan (11 + years if used continuously 24/7/365).  Using high-tech semiconductor chips, LEDs generate intense light - yet consume comparably small amounts of energy.  When individual Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) LEDs are assembled and controlled as a grouping called a Pixel, any combination of billions of colors can be electronically generated – including pure white which is a perfect balance of the three RGB primary colors.  RGB Pixels are individual dots within the pattern of a much larger image on an LED sign face.  In manufacturing, our individual RGB lights within Pixels are spaced evenly to help create a much smoother, less “pixilated” image compared with other LED signs.  Pixels are assembled in Columns and Rows referred to as the sign “Matrix”, and connected to circuit boards within frames called LED Modules.  When attached to a sign frame, multiple Modules make up an LED sign face.  Electronic processors, controllers, and other components that drive and produce incredible full-color graphics are located behind the sign face.

LED sign Resolution is known as pixel density (or how closely together the pixels are spaced), which is usually measured by the number of pixels per square meter.  Resolution may also reference Pixel “Pitch”.  Pixel Pitch is the measurement (in millimeters) from the center of one pixel to the center of the next pixel (another way of measuring Pixel density).  The smaller the Pitch number, the closer the LED Pixels are spaced together.  A higher Pixel density creates a visually clearer sign image. FDLED offers 6mm to 40mm Pitch signs and an even further enhanced technology called Virtual Pixel Sharing which dramatically increases visual graphic quality and definition.  By utilizing Virtual Pixel Sharing technology, individual LEDs from adjacent pixels are shared to create a new virtual pixel half-way between the actual pixels so that images appear Virtually twice as clear.  When choosing a Pixel Pitch, it is important to consider viewing distance (the distance from the sign to the target audience), the speed of passing traffic and viewers, and the quality and size of the graphics that you desire to display on your sign.  FDLED provides a consultative sales approach and will analyze each application independently to assist in proper sign size selection.  In the realm of LED signs, “Size Does Matter”. While FDLED Clients have never expressed that they invested in a sign that was too large, Clients have wished they had selected a larger sign.

Factory Direct LED Signs are capable of displaying incredible graphic messages, pictures, videos and audio. The graphics are made up of many small lights appearing to be one solid, bright, and amazingly effective advertising screen.  Most displays supplied by FDLED are full color.  Full color LED signs are currently replacing traditional back-lit letter signs and cabinet signs across the nation.  Considering the speed at which technology changes, monochrome one-color LED signs are quickly becoming obsolete.  FDLED offers the latest technology and reliability without the comparative high price point. FDLED can custom build any LED product to your unique specifications; however, we consider our standard design features to be the most effective, long-term value available for your advertising dollar.

LED Pixels

FDLED combines individual LEDs into groupings of Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) lights.  When combined, RGB light groups can produce literally billions of different colors.

LED Modules

FDLED utilizes frames called Modules that house the rows and columns of LED Pixels which is referred to as the LED sign Matrix.

LED Sign Pitch

Pitch is defined as the distance from the center of one Pixel to the center of the next Pixel.  A smaller Pitch number (6mm to 40mm) means closer Pixel spacing, a higher Pixel density or resolution, and ultimately a clearer picture.

LED Sign Sizes

In order to accurately recommend the proper sign size for your application, we will request the viewing distance to the sign, and the speed of passing traffic.  The desired sign graphics you intend to use and local government sign codes also contribute to proper sign size selection.

LED Sign Software

FDLED provides user-friendly Windows-based software that enables on-screen messaging, graphics, and video layout capabilities, as well as the transfer of your message to the LED sign controller via graphics upload methods, for on-sign playback.

LED Sign Controller

Similar to the motherboard, CPU, and memory in a computer, Sign Controllers contribute to the quality and speed at which graphics and video are processed and displayed.  FDLED offers 3 controllers ranging from basic to very robust.

LED Sign Graphics Upload Methods

Upload methods most commonly utilize Wireless components or hard-wired connections from your computer to the LED sign.  Wireless uploads are effective to distances of up to 1000 ft.  Other methods are available for longer distances and/or remote access.

For specific viewing requirements, individual LED lights are designed to proportionally focus light forward for front viewing and also to the side for viewing from a side angle.  These qualities are inversely related and as one aspect increases, the other is diminished.  FDLED understands that a proper balance is imperative.  A wide, bright viewing angle is important along with forward brightness.  Factory Direct LEDs provide some of the widest viewing angles available at 160 degrees horizontal.  Technically, Viewing Angle is measured by the side viewing angle at which 50% of the LED brightness is seen, compared with 100% LED brightness as seen from directly in front of the sign.  The increased viewing angle provided by FDLED signs may capture an audience missed with our competitor’s product.

Located above each LED light is a “Louver” which is the equivalent of the brim on a baseball cap.  Louvers protect the LEDs and create an enhanced crisp sign contrast so that graphics appear very bright and rich – even in full daylight!

There are hundreds of variations on the above configurations that you will find in your research and in the sales pitch of our competitors.  FDLED can supply virtually any sign variation that you desire - at a lower price point than our competitors.  FDLED offers standard component specifications and features that have proven to provide the best quality for your dollar without cutting any corners.
